The auction of an historic set of gold scales originally used by The Perth Mint has raised an astonishing $105,000. Heavy equipment supplier WesTrac made the winning bid during this week’s Diggers and Dealers Conference in Kalgoorlie. The proceeds were generously donated to the Western Australian School of Mines by former owner Guy Travis.

A similar set of scales can be seen in this photograph taken at The Perth Mint in 1907 when the large gold bullion bars scattered across the desk were reputedly worth £120,000!

  1. Can you tell me if there are any 2000 olypic 32 piece gold coin sets avaliable. If so how much are they.

    • The Perth Mint in conjunction with the Royal Australian Mint produced an array of coins and medallions, sets, collections, and limited edition framed art pieces in celebration of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Released in 8 major series across three years in the lead up to, and during, the Games, the coins and medallions were available individually and in various combinations as they were unveiled. In addition, there was the complete eight-coin gold set, the complete sixteen-coin silver set, and a prestigious Olympic Millennium Collection which showcased all 24 gold and silver commemorative coins. Just before the Olympics began, the Mint’s also issued an Olympic Masterpiece kilo silver coin which showcased all the sports of the Games. In addition, the Mint’s also jointly released 28 aluminium bronze coins, which were sold individually on cards or in a collector album.

The Sydney 2000 Olympic Medallion program accompanied the official commemorative coin program. In this program, the Mint’s released aluminium bronze medallions which featured the Olympic mascots playing various Olympic sports, medallions featuring all the emblems of the modern Olympics, and ‘countdown’ medallions highlighting milestone days in the lead up to the Games. These series were sold individually, accompanied by complimentary Olympic pins, or in framed collectables of varying combinations.

All of these commemorative products are no longer available from The Perth Mint.

  4. Hi Mike

Please see the above response to Roger. In addition to these two options, you may want to monitor ebay to see what price it could fetch.

    Best of luck
