Do you have a tin of old Australian silver coins hidden away and sometimes wonder whether they’re worth anything?

Check out this calculator provided by The Australian Coin Collecting Weblog and maybe surprise yourself!

Australian Silver Coin Value Calculator

Australian pre-decimal silver coins minted between 1910 and 1945 comprise 92.5% pure silver (aka sterling silver). Later dates contain 50% silver.

When decimal coinage was introduced in 1966, the circular 50 cent coin contained 80% silver. Because the coin’s silver content exceeded its face value, it was consequently minted for 1966 only.

Today, many of these ‘junk’ silver coins are traded for their bullion value.

This calculator is handy in determining the silver bullion content and value of old silver coins, the authors say.

    • Hi Michelle

The Perth Mint is unable to provide advice regarding the value of these numismatic items. As always, however, we recommend that you discuss them with a reputable coin dealer for further information.

  3. Hello,
I have a collection of half pennies dated between the years of 1943 – 1964, a collection of pennies dated between the years of 1937 – 1964 and a collection of threpennies dated between the years of 1910 – 1961. 8. Hi. I have an old three pence coin. The front says AUSTRALIA 1943 THREE PENCE with a picture of what looks like wheat stalks and the back says GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX F:D:IMP. I’d like to know it’s worth please. Thanks.

  9. Do the 1966 coins have a higher value over current standard issue? If so what would be the value of a 1966 20c piece?
And what editions of the 20c are the most valuable?

    • Hi Jacob

Unfortunately we do not provide such valuations – perhaps you could consult a coin dealer for guidance? Alternatively, the Australian Coin and Banknotes Pocket Guide contains interesting information about 20 cent coins including commemorative and ‘error’ varieties, with valuations where appropriate.

      Kind regards
