Although it was the fifth series to air, Star Trek: Enterprise predates the original adventures of Captain James T. Kirk aboard U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701. Its stories centre on the 22nd century voyages of Captain Jonathan Archer and the Enterprise NX-01 during the early days of interstellar travel.
Archer took command of his starship, an experimental prototype, between 2151 and 2161. Mandated by Starfleet to explore the galaxy and visit as many worlds as possible, he makes first contact with more than a dozen species, including the Klingons, Andorians, and Xindi.
Star Trek: Enterprise 2015 Silver Coins
This month sees the addition of Captain Jonathan Archer and U.S.S. Enterprise NX-01 to the popular Star Trek series of 1oz silver coins. Struck by The Perth Mint from 99.9% pure silver, the prized releases are strictly limited by mintage.
Charming, bold, a born explorer, Archer is guided by a core of human decency and intuition, even when they contravene direct orders. He is independent, yet has a strong sense of duty. Archer holds a grudge against the Vulcans, whom he blames for keeping humans stuck on Earth, but learns to cope with his Vulcan science officer, T’Pol. As captain of a starship his father helped build, Archer is eager to make history and see what’s ‘out there’.
The first of a new generation of warp-five starships, Enterprise NX-01 is the culmination of 32 years of research and development that puts humanity within reach of thousands of inhabited worlds. At 190 meters long, the NX-01 is a bit smaller than Kirk’s Enterprise, and carries a crew complement of just 83 men and women. Unlike ships in the future series, it doesn’t have deflector shields or phasers, but it does come equipped with a phase cannon and a rudimentary transporter that functions efficiently… most of the time!
