As chronicler of The Royal Family with its series of stunning Australian numismatic celebrations, The Perth Mint is honoured to unveil three new coins in special tribute to Her Majesty’s 90th birthday.

Struck from pure gold or silver, each coin portrays a representation of St Edward’s Crown. It is surrounded by branches of wattle in recognition of the constitutional and historical links between Australia and the British monarchy.

Significance of design elements

St Edward’s Crown

St Edward’s Crown is used for the coronation of the sovereign. The original, which dated back to and was named after Edward the Confessor, was destroyed on the order of Oliver Cromwell in 1649. Part of the new regalia completed for the coronation of Charles II, St Edward’s Crown is made from gold and contains some 440 precious and semi-precious gems. It was last used to crown Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953.

Golden Wattle

Native to Australia, Acacia pycnantha, commonly known as the golden wattle, produces a profuse display of fragrant, golden flowers in late winter and spring. Along with many similar species from the genus Acacia, it inspired Australia’s national colours – green and gold. Golden wattle was recognised as an iconic symbol for many years before being formally adopted as Australia’s national floral emblem during bicentenary celebrations in 1988.

Happy 90th Birthday Your Majesty

The Queen was born Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary at 2:40am on 21 April 1926 in central London. On her 21st birthday, she formally dedicated her life to the service of the Commonwealth.

To mark her 90th birthday, The Queen is demonstrating her enduring commitment by attending a picnic lunch with 10,000 people representing 600 charities of which she is patron. Other celebratory events she is attending include a pageant at Windsor Castle, a service of thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral, and the traditional Birthday Parade on Horse Guards Parade.

The Perth Mint wishes The Queen an extremely happy birthday and expresses the hope that she also finds time to relax and enjoy her momentous achievement.
