On this day in 1616, Dutch sea captain Dirk Hartog became the first known European to land on the west coast of the Australian continent.

Skipper of the East India Company vessel Eendracht, Hartog’ destination was Bantam, a trading city located in western Java. Using the ‘Roaring Forties’ to speed the ship’s voyage across the Indian Ocean, he strayed too far east – inadvertently running into ‘Terra Australis Incognita’ at what we know today as Shark Bay.

The expedition spent two days exploring the area. Before departing, Hartog left evidence of his landing in the shape of an inscribed pewter plate – thus creating the oldest European object ever found on Australian soil.

Earlier releases from the Star Trek coin program portrayed Captain James T. Kirk and First Officer Spock. This new addition featuring a vividly coloured design celebrates the intrepid leaders once again, but this time alongside five other memorable crew members from the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701.

Struck from 2oz of 99.9% pure silver, the new coin is housed in a stunning replica of an original communicator – a palm held voice communications device that anticipated the development of the modern flip phone.

Characters featured for the first time on a coin from the Star Trek program comprise:

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Leonard ‘Bones’ McCoy

tos_mccoyDespite an argumentative and sometimes cynical nature, Bones McCoy cared deeply for the crew members under his medical care. But it wasn’t only their physical well-being that concerned him. McCoy played his role as psychologist expertly to the hilt — especially for the ship’s two senior officers. As such an emotional watchdog he was not afraid to take on his captain, but it was his running battle of wits with Spock which became legendary.

Chief Engineer Montgomery ‘Scotty’ Scott

tos_scottyRenowned for his love of Scotch and the ability to play the bagpipes, Scotty was regarded as something of a miracle worker thanks to his engineering feats, which on more than one occasion saved the Enterprise. As well as getting the best out of the ship’s warp engines, Scotty was often called upon to ‘energize’ the ship’s transporter system, giving rise in popular culture to the phrase “Bean me up, Scotty”.

Chief Communications Officer Nyota Uhura

tos_uhuraResourceful, dependable and savvy, Nyota Uhura set a high bar for subsequent communications officers. It was not unusual to see her rewire or repair her own communications board during a crisis. But this pioneering female member of the crew was capable of much more. Not only was she trained to serve at the Enterprise helm, such was her confidence that she once assumed command of the starship and led a landing party to rescue senior male officers.

Navigator Pavel Andreievich Chekov

tos_chekovOne of the youngest officers aboard the Enterprise, Pavel Chekov was so full of brash assertions laced with his Russian ethnic pride and accomplishments that he became a good-natured joke among his superiors. Prone to hot-headed actions and romantic attachments, he was nevertheless a notable graduate of the Space Academy and a capable substitute for Spock at the science officer station when necessary.

Helmsman Hikaru Sulu

tos_suluSulu controlled both the speed and attitude of the Enterprise, as well as the ship’s weapon and shield systems. He was also an accomplished pilot of craft from many eras and cultures, piloting with little warm-up both an antique 20th century Earth helicopter and a Klingon Bird-of-Prey. Of Asian descent, Sulu was an active hobbyist with interests including fencing, botany, and the martial arts of his native culture.

BUY NOW: Star Trek: The Original Series – U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 Crew 2016 2oz Silver Proof Coin

Issued as legal tender of Tuvalu, no more than 5,000 of these superb collectables will be released.

Ancient Chinese philosophers thought all things in the universe are made up of two contrasting forces, known as Yin and Yang.

While contradictory, Yin and Yang are also complementary, meaning they cannot exist without each other. And because they are constantly re-balancing – their influence over one another repeatedly ebbing and flowing – the concept was used to explain the cyclical changes in nature.

As Yang energy overcomes Yin, for example, day turns to night. Broader manifestations in Yin Yang’s duality include slow/fast; soft/hard; cold/hot; wet/dry; passive/aggressive. Yin is associated with the earth, the moon, and femininity; while Yang is identified with the sky, the sun, and masculinity.

Symbolic representation of Yin Yang

The symbolic representation of Yin Yang is known as the ‘taijitu’. A circular motif, it’s divided between black (Yin) and white (Yang) teardrop shapes – suggesting the transitional effect of one side over the other. Their interdependence is denoted by a ‘seed’ of the opposite colour in each half.

A traditional Chinese symbol for more than 1,000 years, it has been embraced in the West – particularly since the counterculture movement of the 1960s – where it is regarded as a symbol of balance and harmony.

2016 Yin Yang Rotating Charm 1oz Silver Antiqued Coin

In an exceptionally innovative move, The Perth Mint has incorporated a spherical Yin Yang symbol in its new 2016 Yin Yang Rotating Charm 1oz Silver Antiqued Coin.

The revolving enamel-plated charm sits in the middle of the ring-shaped coin, surrounded by inscriptions and pictorial representations of Wu Xing – the Five Phases or Five Elements of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water – from which all things in the Universe are thought to arise and return.

No more than 3,000 of these amazing coins will be released in presentation packaging.
