Earlier releases from the Star Trek coin program portrayed Captain James T. Kirk and First Officer Spock. This new addition featuring a vividly coloured design celebrates the intrepid leaders once again, but this time alongside five other memorable crew members from the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701.
Struck from 2oz of 99.9% pure silver, the new coin is housed in a stunning replica of an original communicator – a palm held voice communications device that anticipated the development of the modern flip phone.
Characters featured for the first time on a coin from the Star Trek program comprise:
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Leonard ‘Bones’ McCoy
Despite an argumentative and sometimes cynical nature, Bones McCoy cared deeply for the crew members under his medical care. But it wasn’t only their physical well-being that concerned him. McCoy played his role as psychologist expertly to the hilt — especially for the ship’s two senior officers. As such an emotional watchdog he was not afraid to take on his captain, but it was his running battle of wits with Spock which became legendary.
Chief Engineer Montgomery ‘Scotty’ Scott
Renowned for his love of Scotch and the ability to play the bagpipes, Scotty was regarded as something of a miracle worker thanks to his engineering feats, which on more than one occasion saved the Enterprise. As well as getting the best out of the ship’s warp engines, Scotty was often called upon to ‘energize’ the ship’s transporter system, giving rise in popular culture to the phrase “Bean me up, Scotty”.
Chief Communications Officer Nyota Uhura
Resourceful, dependable and savvy, Nyota Uhura set a high bar for subsequent communications officers. It was not unusual to see her rewire or repair her own communications board during a crisis. But this pioneering female member of the crew was capable of much more. Not only was she trained to serve at the Enterprise helm, such was her confidence that she once assumed command of the starship and led a landing party to rescue senior male officers.
Navigator Pavel Andreievich Chekov
One of the youngest officers aboard the Enterprise, Pavel Chekov was so full of brash assertions laced with his Russian ethnic pride and accomplishments that he became a good-natured joke among his superiors. Prone to hot-headed actions and romantic attachments, he was nevertheless a notable graduate of the Space Academy and a capable substitute for Spock at the science officer station when necessary.
Helmsman Hikaru Sulu
Sulu controlled both the speed and attitude of the Enterprise, as well as the ship’s weapon and shield systems. He was also an accomplished pilot of craft from many eras and cultures, piloting with little warm-up both an antique 20th century Earth helicopter and a Klingon Bird-of-Prey. Of Asian descent, Sulu was an active hobbyist with interests including fencing, botany, and the martial arts of his native culture.
Issued as legal tender of Tuvalu, no more than 5,000 of these superb collectables will be released.
