Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek: The Next Generation debuted in 1987 and ran for 178 episodes over seven seasons until 1994, making it the longest running Star Trek series to date.
Set a century after Captain James T. Kirk embarked on his famous five year mission, the new series followed the 24th century adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D.
A distinguished Starfleet officer, archaeologist and diplomat, Picard endeared himself to a whole new generation of Star Trek fans, playing a central role in developing the sci-fi series’ reputation as one of the most culturally influential shows in television history.
As in The Original Series, the captain was surrounded by an inner sanctum of crew members, who each attracted loyal fans in their own right. On the 30th anniversary of The Next Generation, The Perth Mint’s latest Star Trek commemorative coin celebrates Jean-Luc Picard and six of his trusted officers.
Commander Deanna Troi – Ship’s Counsellor
Of mixed human and Betazoid heritage and a legendary connoisseur of chocolate, Troi had partial telepathic abilities that enabled her to empathise strongly. Her empathic ability was a key factor during away missions and first contact scenarios.
Lieutenant Commander Worf – Conn Officer/Chief Security Officer
Starfleet’s first and only Klingon officer, Worf was adopted by Federation parents, which meant he was often torn between his human upbringing and his own Klingon culture. From his unique standpoint, however, he was able to play a key role in Empire politics.
Commander William T. Riker – First Officer
Often referred to as ‘Number One’, Riker matured from a bold and ambitious young officer into a more patient, vigilant and wise character. From the second season he sported a beard, a trademark considered to make him appear more nautical.
Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge – Helmsman/Chief Engineer
Blind since birth, La Forge’s VISOR provided him with a sense of sight. With an irreverence tempered by the added responsibility of his move to engineering, he nevertheless retained a strong sense of humour.
Commander Beverly Crusher MD – Chief Medical Officer
Romantically linked with Captain Picard, Crusher was thorough and conscientious in her medical work. She was also a superior scientist in various fields of research. A Fellow of the Academy of Starfleet Surgeons, she took a turn for one year as head of Starfleet Medical before returning to the Enterprise.
Lieutenant Commander Data – Chief Operations Officer
An artificial intelligence and synthetic life form, Data was a self-aware and anatomically fully functional android who tried hard to feel human emotion. His ability to show wisdom, sensitivity, and curiosity won him immense respect.
Crafted from 2oz of 99.99% pure silver, this fully authorised commemorative coin is issued by The Perth Mint with a limited mintage of just 3,000.
Destined to be sought after by fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation as a unique piece of memorabilia, the coin’s design includes the series’ official 30th anniversary logo.
Housed in superb presentation packaging, this release is recommended as a fascinating complement to our earlier Star Trek: The Original Series U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 Crew 2016 2oz Silver Proof Coin.
